Out and back with the Porlock Weir Pilot Gig Club…I had the pleasure of being invited down to film the club practice sessions on a glorious evening over the Bank Holiday weekend in May. The clubs home is at Porlock Weir on the Somerset coastline of Exmoor National Park.
Sometimes it’s not all about work but about supporting the local community & new initiatives, however…time, tide, work & weather have really been against me getting out to take some more aerial shots of the members of the Porlock Weir Gig Club honing their pilot gig skills & for that I’m apologetic as it’s a great subject to capture from above. Fingers crossed as we progress into summer, the days will get longer & the weather milder & I’ll manage to get down to the Weir and catch them hard at practice along the shores of Porlock Bay.
Out & about & aloft at Porlock Weir watching the watery antics of the newly formed (2018) Porlock Weir Pilot Gig Club. A Pilot Gig for my far flung Internet friends is by tradition a Cornish built, 32ft wooden clinker built vessel rowed by six and used in the past to take pilots out to harbour bound sailing ships; whichever gig reached the anchored ship first received the money for the job, so they were built to be fast and sea worthy. These days they are raced by some 71 clubs, with 8000 members and 202 boats.
That’s my potted history and I may well be wrong…if so, feel free to keep it to yourself 😉 It looks like great fun though and I wish the new club based at the Weir much success for the future.
